Susan Mahnel

Susan Mahnel is the Young Families Ministry Assistant for Youth, Children’s, and Young Families ministries. She previously volunteered in Children’s ministry at the Lake of the Woods Church for 5 years and in Youth Ministry for over a year and a half while homeschooling her son, Alex 18, and her daughter, June 12. When her children both went to school, Alex to Penn State and June to Lighthouse Academy of Fredericksburg, Susan decided to apply for the Young Families position and use her experience to assist the ministries for which she already served.
A graduate of St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Susan has a degree in Psychology and a diverse employment background that includes among others, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counseling, feature writing for newspapers in Maryland and South Carolina, online learning assistance at Germanna Community College and several administrative assistant positions before focusing her attention on full-time parenting and, eventually, being a full-time home educator. Susan is originally from Kansas and joined the US Navy at age 17. She has lived in several states on both the east and west coast, including Hawaii, and she lived in Rota, Spain as well. Of them all, Hawaii and Virginia have been her favorites.
